DIT launches unique identification cards for Indian citizens

The department of information technology (DIT) has initiated the process of assigning a unique identification (UID) to the Indian citizen. The UID scheme will form the core database for delivery of all citizen-centric e-Governance services. UIDs will serve as the basis for efficient delivery of social and welfare services. The scheme is being implemented under the supervision of the Planning Commission in consultation with the ministry of home affairs, registrar general of census of India, ministry of rural development and ministry of finance. The purpose of UID is to create a central database of resident information and assign a unique identification number to each such resident in the country. The UID will provide a common medium for identifying all citizens by government agencies and enhancing the efficiency and transparency in service delivery. The UID database would, therefore, create a unique reference for every citizen. This database will provide a common link to all government departments.
