Ban Ki-moon joins the movement against tuberculosis
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has joined the “Call to Stop Tuberculosis,” a global partnership to eradicate the curable disease, because of which around 2 million people die every year. “Call to Stop Tuberculosis” campaign is part of the Stop TB partnership, which is led by the UN World Health Organization (WHO), and it envisions a tuberculosis-free world. One must recall that World TB Day would be held on 24 March, 2007. The ‘Global Fund’, an international public/private partnership, is currently the world’s largest donor in the fight against tuberculosis. The initiative has provided almost 70 per cent of all funding, totalling close to US$ 2 billion for 133 programmes in 102 countries. Of the 40 million people with HIV/AIDS, one third of them are likely to be infected with tuberculosis (TB). Currently, Sub Saharan Africa is the hardest hit by HIV/ AIDS.
