World Health Organisation Chief says polio fight nearly won
The Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Margaret Chan, has asked for fighting polio to eradicate it. The number of people paralysed by polio has come down from 3,50,000 in 1988 to under 2,000 in the year 2006. Cases of polio are still reported from Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, where poor public health infrastructure is compounded by conflict, poverty, religious and social tensions.
