New wireless standard promises ultra-fast short-range data transfer
Industry association Ecma International has published the standard for a new ultra-fast radio. The 60GHz standard for short-range unlicensed communications provides a high speed wireless personal area network (including point-to-point) for bulk data transfer and multimedia streaming. A single-chip 60 GHz digital low-power radio with embedded 60 GHz antenna was demonstrated at Ecma in Geneva in November last year. Developed by the Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the 60 GHz radio transferred 200 Megabyte-sized data and image files in less than a second
