Proposals for over 60 new med colleges sent to MCI

Even as it ruled out any major shortage of post-graduate medical seats, the Government today said proposals for over 60 new medical colleges have been sent to the Medical Council of India (MCI) and norms relaxed for establishment of new colleges. Norms would be relaxed for medical colleges opening with 50, 100 and 150 MBBS seats annually, said Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi. Relaxations have also been given in the norms of land requirement, bed strength and indoor occupancy in North-East and hilly states as well as in states which have implemented National Rural Health Mission, she said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. The Minister said they have sent 68 proposals for setting up new hospitals during 2009-10 to the MCI for its technical uation and recommendations. She said the criteria relating to bed strength in teaching hospitals at the time of starting medical colleges has also been revised to 250 beds instead of 300 beds. Criteria for indoor bed occupancy has also been revised to 60 per cent to encourage opening of new medical colleges in un-served and under-served areas in the country, the Minister said.
