First Lady: US$851m to go for community health centers and IT upgradation

On Monday, First Lady Michelle Obama announced that US$851 million will be granted to Community Health Centers across US. The construction, repair and renovation of more than 1500 health center sites will be supported by the Recovery Act Capital Improvement Program (CIP) grants. More than 650 centers will use the funds to purchase new equipment or health information technology systems, and nearly 400 health centers will adopt and expand the use of electronic health records.

She described that the grant would mean new diagnostic equipment, renovation of existing facilities, expansion of computer center to help in managing electronic medical records, adding on new staff and expansion of effective techniques. The CIP grant awards are the third set of health center grants provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
