Children’s Kidney Replacement Device Developed

US researchers have developed a new kidney replacement device specifically designed for children in need of dialysis due to disease or congenital defects. Physicians and researchers from Emory University, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Georgia Institute of Technology have invented a new continuous renal replacement therapy device, especially for children.

At the moment there is no US Food and Drug Administration-approved kidney replacement device that is specifically designed for children, forcing doctors to use adult dialysis equipment, which may cause clotting or internal bleeding in children. Adult dialysis equipment is also likely to withdraw too much fluid from a paediatric patient, leading to dehydration and loss of blood pressure, researchers said.
