Cape Town Prepares World Cup Emergency Centre
Cape Town’s Somerset Hospital has started renovating its emergency centre in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Government has invested R25m ($3m) to renovate the old emergency centre while the business community has funded R8.5m ($1.14m) for medical equipment, including a CT scanner and modern soft furnishings. In the run up to the event, the Western Cape province’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Unit has received 71 new ambulances to replace older vehicles in the EMS fleet. The province will deploy 130 ambulances, which will respond to priority calls within 15 minutes in urban areas and within an hour in rural areas.
