Electronic Nose to Detect Ovarian Cancer
Scientists at the University of Gavle and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, University of Gothenburg, are developing an electronic nose that can screen blood samples to detect ovarian cancer in its early stages. They had previously demonstrated that ovarian cancers emit a specific scent, and used dogs to distinguish between ovarian cancer tissue and healthy tissue. The study also revealed that the blood of ovarian cancer patients had the same specific scent. Scientists are working on detecting the scent using an existing electronic nose. The scientists said the team’s goal is to be able to screen blood samples from apparently healthy women, and so detect ovarian cancer at an early stage when it can still be cured.
