True Whole-Body Field View PET/CT Better at Staging Cancer

Using true whole-body field view during PET/CT scanning can result in more accurate cancer staging than using a limited whole-body field of view, a study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology has found. The study enrolled 500 patients who were given PET/CT with true whole-body field view. Fifty-nine were found to have a risk of malignancy outside the limited whole-body field of view, and new cancer involvement was diagnosed in 20 of those patients. As malignancy was detected outside the whole-body field in 20 patients, 65% were given a change in management and 55% of them a change in cancer staging. According to the researchers, true whole-body field PET/CT is recommended as limited whole-body field of view can miss the metastases outside of typical areas, leading to the underestimation of the true extent of the disease.
