EHR implementation could cost more
A study in Health Affairs states that implementing EHRs in primary care practices with five physicians would cost each doctor an average of $46,659 for the first year. The study can be viewed as a “best-case scenario,” in which participating practices received adequate corporate assistance in adopting EHRs and avoided many potential implementation barriers, the Texas-based authors noted. On the other hand, a CDW Healthcare survey of 1,000 U.S. patients found that 49 percent worry EHRs could put their health information at greater risk, and that 84 percent believe either provider practices or their staffers have primary responsibility for protecting data. “For physician practices, IT security must be a primary part of any EHR,” said CDW Healthcare utive Bob Rossi.
