Specialised Hospital units by Government
The government will open more trauma-care centers and increase the number of beds and doctors in critical units of state-run hospitals in an attempt to reduce overcrowding and denial of admission. The health department decided on the upgrade of super-specialty units, such as neurosurgery and burns, following reports that even critical patients were being denied admission in violation of the chief minister’s order. Besides, intensive therapy units will be set up in the two departments for treating critical patients. More neurosurgeons will be recruited for the two hospitals but the numbers have not yet been decided. The hospital will be upgraded. The burn wards at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and Sambhunath Pandit Hospital will be upgraded to the standard of the burns unit at SSKM Hospital. The revamped units will have special intensive care. The facilities in other hospitals should be upgraded to lessen the load on super-specialty hospitals, such as the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences and SSKM. The pressure on the institute of neuro-sciences will ease a lot once the trauma-care centres come up. The institute is the only state-run hospital where critical head injury patients are treated. Once the new facilities are opened, RG Kar and SSKM can treat such patients.
