ICD May Prevent Heart Attacks
Scottsdale Healthcare in Arizona, US, is testing an implantable device that could prevent cardiac arrests by using electrical impulses to interrupt fatal heart rhythms and restore normal heartbeat.The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) is placed under the skin, near the heart, and is capable of delivering electric shocks. Thomas Mattioni, Scottsdale Healthcare’s medical director of electrophysiology, said the S-ICD is unique because it is implanted entirely under the skin and does not need wire placement inside the heart. This should simplify surgery and eliminate the need for x-rays, reducing patient exposure to radiation.
