Researchers Develop Brain Scan That Can Detect Autism
Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, UK, have developed a brain scan that can detect autism with 90% accuracy.The technique was tested in a study involving 20 autistic adults and 20 non-autistic adults. It involves taking an MRI scan, recreating a 3D image of it and then feeding it into a computer for analysis. Dr Christine Ecker, who led the study, said the new test could help alleviate the need for the emotional, time consuming and expensive diagnostic process that autism patients and families currently have to endure.Autism spectrum disorder is characterised by impaired social skills, difficulty in communication and repetitive behaviour. It affects 1 in every 100 adults in the UK.
