Urology EHR vendor sues rival for allegedly accessing patient data

MeridianEMR — a vendor of electronic health record systems for urologists — announced that it has filed a lawsuit against rival EHR provider Intuitive Medical Software, alleging that Intuitive illegally accessed patient data on meridianEMR’s system, Becker’s Hospital Review reports (Rodak, Becker’s Hospital Review, 8/22). The lawsuit, which meridianEMR filed in June, claims that Intuitive, the Shappley Clinic in Tennessee and a client accessed encrypted, proprietary data when an outside consultant attempted to help Shappley switch from meridianEMR’s EHR system to Intuitive’s UroChartEHR system. MeridianEMR said that Richard Kroutil, director of technical services at Intuitive, acknowledged under oath in July that Intuitive had a “clone” server that was an exact replica of a meridianEMR server (Goedert, Health Data Management, 8/22). Elliot Stein, an attorney for Intuitive, said the company denies the lawsuit’s allegations.
