Tamil Nadu takes lead in cadaver transplantation
Tamil Nadu is set to become the first state in India to have a separate authority for cadaver transplant once the Cadaver Transplantation Authority (CTA) is established.
The CTA is expected to streamline the entire transplantation process.
The CTA is expected to be led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The authority will also evolve policies on transplantation.
Tamil Nadu has among the largest number of deaths due to road accidents in India. In the last year alone there were 66,238 casualties which mean that there will be more cadavers available for transplantation. The state currently has 72 hospitals that are registered as per provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organ Act of 1994.
The CTA is expected to streamline the process of organ transplant. The Authority is expected to have regulatory powers and as well as the power to raise funds through charity for its expenses.
