Pancreas-kidney transplant from organ donor cures man of diabetes
A man diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes underwent a pancreas-kidney transplant, the third of its kind performed in India, to successfully replace his organs with those of a donor.
The 12-hour transplant surgery was done at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kerala. It was the first such transplant in Kerala.
The donor was a brain-dead patient who had donated his organs through the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOs).
The patient, 35-year old Syed Yunus Shahir had been confirmed as a Type-1 diabetic 19 years ago. Since then, he had been insulin-dependent. The operation, he says, has freed hims from all diabetes-related complication including retinopathy and end-stage kidney failure.
Doctors, however, caution transplant is not a solution for all those who suffer from Type-1 diabetes. The combined procedure is particularly effective for those with Type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney failure. Even a transplanted kidney could be affected by the high blood sugar levels if the kidney alone is transplanted.
Doctors said the procedure could improve the quality of life and bring freedom from diabetes-related complications.
