200 Jan Aushadhi Centres to be opened by Centre: Karnataka

Centre has been focusing on making India healthy. With objective to open 200 Jan Aushadhi centres in Karnataka, the Centre will sign MoU with Karnataka government on October 2.


Ananth Kumar, Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister stated the same in a meeting with Ramesh Kumar, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Karnataka on Monday in Delhi.


The key overview of PM’s Jan Aushadhi centres:

  • Sell drugs at a discount to MRP
  • Centres will sell 580 generic drugs

As reported, government has already opened 32 centres at community health centres and will open 168 centres at district and taluk hospitals. The Centre will provide Rs 2.5 lakh per centre. It is expected that state government must take necessary steps to provide these inexpensive drugs to people.


Medical devices, including surgical and consumable items, are defined as ‘drugs’ under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. As per the information provided by Department of Pharmaceuticals, 165 surgical and consumable items are already being sold through Jan Aushadhi stores.
