Asia’s first Mobile Stroke Unit launched by KMCH
Tamil Nadu-based Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) has launched a Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) — a first of its kind facility in Asia — to provide critical stroke care to patients on the way to the hospital, media reports said.
The MSU is a specially designed ambulance having telemedicine technology and the capability of conducting and producing advanced quality CT scan for stroke diagnosis.
The vehicle was built with cooperation from the Atomic Energy Commission to ensure that it was safe to perform CT scanning on the move, Outlook India quoted KMCH Chairman Dr Nalla G Palanisamy as saying at the launch.
Faster diagnosis and treatment holds the key for recovery among stroke patients. The vehicle with facilities to rapidly assess neurological condition of the patient and CT scan can make a lot of difference.
Our ultimate goal is to show that patients treated on the mobile stroke unit will have better outcomes because of earlier treatment and, therefore, will have fewer long-term acute care needs and/or rehabilitation needs, the Economic Times quoted Dr Palanisami as saying.
Coimbatore-based KMCH ordered the Rs six crore unit, which was specifically developed for Indian roads, from Schiller after holding several rounds of talk.
It is designed to significantly reduce the time from the onset of symptoms to the delivery of care, a crucial factor in improving stroke outcomes.
