Balram Bhargava appointed Director-General of ICMR

Dr Balram Bhargava, who is a professor/consultant of cardiology department at All India Institute of Medical science currently, has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi and Secretary, Department of Health Research “ Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Bhargava, a Padma Shri awardee, has been appointed for a period of three years or until attainment of age of 60 years, according to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.


The post was lying vacant since October 2017 after Dr Soumya Swaminathans appointment as a deputy director general for the World Health Organisation.

The Delhi-based ICMR is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.


Born in 1961, Bhargava hails from New Delhi. He is a renowned cardiologist, medical educationist and an innovator. The Government of India rewarded him with Padma Shri award in 2014 for his contribution to the field of medicine.
