20,000 coaches of India Railway to act as isolation wards for COVID-19 patients; prototype ready

At a time when the Government is leaving no stone unturned to improve health infrastructure to tackle COVID-19 patients, the Railways has decided to lend a helping hand. It has decided to modify 20,000 coaches into quarantine/ isolation coaches to bolster the quarantine facilities to break the chain of infection due to Coronavirus.

This decision was taken in a recently held meeting between the Armed Forces Medical Services, Medical Department of various Zonal Railways, and Ayushman Bharat, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.


As per the latest report, five zonal railways have already prepared the prototype of such coaches. Sharing pics of such a prototype a tweet by the Railway said, “Prototypes of Isolation coach for #COVID19 is made by Railways at Kamakhya in Assam and New Delhi. We are working day and night to fight against this pandemic and contribute in every possible way.”


“These modified 20000 coaches can accommodate up to 3.2 lakh possible beds for isolation needs. Work on modification of 5000 coaches, which are to be converted initially into quarantine/ isolation coaches has already started. These 5000 coaches would be having the capacity to accommodate up to 80000 beds. One coach is expected to have 16 beds for isolation”, railways said in a statement.
