Delhi: AIIMS Nurses Union warns of indefinite strike over working hours
The AIIMS Nurses Union, Delhi has threatened the authority to pay heed to their demands, else it will go for an indefinite strike from June 15.The Union has been protesting over poor working condition and want their concerns to be addressed amicably.
As many as 300 people including 47 nursing staff, have tested COVID-19 positive at the Institute. Their demands are uniform four-hour shift with personal protective equipment in Covid-19 areas of the Centre-run hospital, a uniform rotation policy between Covid and non-Covid areas, and establishment of proper donning and doffing areas, a ET report said.
“At this difficult juncture…we are still left unheard by the AIIMS authorities. So we have been forced to resort to severe steps, including mass casual leave on June 10,” a mail written to AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria reads.
If the union goes for an indefinite strike, onus would be on the AIIMS administration for all consequences, the mail added. Seeking a prompt meeting with the director, the union said, “We also do not want to go for strike during this difficult time.”
“More than 500 nurses in AIIMS Jhajjar, AIIMS trauma centre and C6 and D6 of AIIMS are on COVID-19 duty. It is very difficult to work while wearing PPE kit as you sweat extensively as the PPE is airtight and you can’t eat, drink or even go to the bathroom,” AIIMS Nurses’ union president, Harish Kajla, said.
“Nurses have been working six-hour shifts, wearing PPE kits for more than two months now, and it is affecting their health. Women can’t even change sanitary pads while on six-hour duty as they are wearing PPE kits,” he added.
