Covid-19 Implication: 63 Cantonment Boards to Open their Hospitals for Civilians
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has asked the Indian Army to lend a helping hand as the nation struggles with stressed health infrastructure in the face of daily reporting of over 2 lakh Covid-19 cases.
The Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force have their own hospitals to cater to the healthcare needs of jawans, officers, and their families. These healthcare facilities themselves are coping with a crunch as the double mutant Covid-19 virus is rapidly spreading.
On Monday, Singh at a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane and Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar told local commanders stationed in various states for meeting their respective Chief Ministers and offering them help in this unprecedented time.
This development came at a time when the ministry is receiving petitions from various states for building pop-up Covid hospitals such as the one that was opened by DRDO or the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Delhi.
Also, the ministry has told all 63 cantonment boards with their own hospitals for opening their doors for people residing outside the cantonment area. The DRDO will set up and reactivate the Covid hospitals in five cities, including Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Patna, and Nasik.
