No Need for CT Scans in Mild Covid-19 Cases: AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria
AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria has expressed his concerns over the misuse of CT scans and biomarkers and warned that they can also be harmful. If a person has a mild Covid-19, there is no use of a CT scan, Dr Guleria said.
Pointing out to a data by the International Atomic Energy Agency for radiation protection and medicine, Dr Guleria said that constant CT scans, particularly if conducted at a young age, pose an increased risk of cancer in later life. “One CT scan is equivalent to almost 300-400 chest X-rays. It also heightens the risk of getting cancer in young people.”
He added that in mild cases and according to a study, even in asymptomatic cases, a CT scan may show patch which go away on their own without treatment.
Referring to Clinical management guidelines, Dr Guleria said that people with mild illness need no medicine. He advised, on the basis of limited data, people can take ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine. But, there is no need for taking too many medicines.
