Union Government urges states to achieve 100% Ayushman Bharat Card saturation
The Union government has called upon all States and Union Territories to ensure complete saturation of Ayushman Bharat cards by leveraging the services of healthcare workers at the grassroots level. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is hailed as the world’s largest government-sponsored health insurance scheme.
As part of the initiative, stakeholders have been directed to establish State offices and conduct regular reviews and monitoring of the program’s progress. Commending the efforts of Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka in implementing the scheme, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasised that India’s diversity necessitates tailor-made solutions rather than adopting health models from other countries.

Under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, more than 12 crore poor and vulnerable families (approximately 55 crore beneficiaries), comprising the bottom 40 per cent of the Indian population, receive health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. The scheme offers portability, allowing beneficiaries to avail of cashless treatment at any empanelled public or private hospital across the country. It covers approximately 1,929 procedures, encompassing all associated costs such as drugs, supplies, diagnostic services, physician’s fees, room charges, surgeon charges, operating theater expenses, and ICU charges.

Public hospitals are reimbursed at par with private hospitals for the healthcare services provided. Furthermore, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions prior to enrolling in PM-JAY are eligible for treatment of all medical conditions under the scheme from the day of enrollment.
The minister highlighted that the chintan shivir (brainstorming session) would facilitate the exchange of insights, best practices, valuable experiences, and suggestions from different states, enriching the policies and scheme designs aimed at ensuring the welfare of the largest number of beneficiaries.
