Varian Unveils High-Precision Radiotherapy Device
A new line of “super” accelerators for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery have been launched to enable new approaches to advance the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer. The TrueBeam platform, developed by Varian Medical Systems, is the first fully-integrated system to treat a moving target with an unprecedented speed and accuracy, according to the company. The solution uses a completely re-engineered control system and a multitude of technical innovations to dynamically synchronise imaging, patient positioning, motion management and treatment delivery. Designed to be a versatile platform, the TrueBeam can be used for all forms of advanced external-beam radiotherapy, which can deliver treatments up to 50 percent faster with a dose delivery rate of up to 2,400 monitor units per minute. The system also delivers Varian’s new ‘gated’ RapidArc radiotherapy, which compensates for tumour motion by synchronising imaging with dose delivery during a continuous rotation around the patient. The TrueBeam system also includes a newly-designed X-ray tube optimised for generating high volumes of quality 3D (cone-beam CT) images. The new line includes TrueBeam STx, specially configured for advanced radiosurgery.
