Nurses using EHR systems report better patient health outcomes
US nurses who used electronic health record systems consistently reported improved patient care and outcomes, according to a study published in the Journal of Nursing Administration, United Press International reports.
The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, involved 16,000 nurses working at 316 hospitals across four states.
The study found that having a basic EHR system was linked to better outcomes regardless of nurse staffing levels.
The study also found that nurses working with fully implemented EHR systems were significantly less likely to report:
 Adverse patient safety issues;
 Frequent medication errors; and
 Low quality of care.
The study’s authors said their findings show that both nurses and EHRs play important roles in providing quality care.
