First health institute in Nagaland (India) inaugurated
Nagaland Governor K. Sankaranarayanan congratulated the government and the people at the inaugural function of the Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CISHR) recently. The CISHR has been set up in collaboration with the Christian Medical College, Vellore and the Emmanuel Hospital Association. The governor said it had been his dream to start engineering or medical colleges after he found out that the state had none. He hoped that the hospital would be upgraded to a 300-bedded one in the near future and become eligible for the status of a medical college. GOvernor, Sankaranarayanan said the institution would provide both opportunities and challenges. “The opportunity is the ability to get the best of healthcare facilities and medical experts to create a world class hospital, whereas the challenge is to ensure that the dreams do not remain mere dreams.” The Governor also called upon the institute to promote community health care, rural hygiene and educate people in order to prevent the menace of HIV/ AIDS in the state. Chief minister Neiphiu Rio, in his address, said their long cherished dream to give the best medical centre to the people of the state has come true. The project for a 500-bedded referral hospital was sanctioned by the government of India in 1985, for which the work commenced in 1989. However, the project could not be completed because of various reasons, including cost escalation. It was stalled after the first phase. However now that the project has borne fruit, the people of Nagaland can look up to various other up-coming projects including school for the children, a nursing college and a medical college in near future. Rio in his address thanked P.K John, the director of CIHSR, and his team for their contributions to establish the institute.
