Study: Need based Health IT push should be considered for the children

According to a new study from two California-based not-for-profits, eHealth could help in improving children’s health, but children’s unique needs are not being taken into account as the technological advancements are made. In a study titled, ‘Technology-Enabled Innovations for Improving Children’s Health,’ the Health Technology Center and The Children’s Partnership conducted a literature review and interviewed about 115 experts on the significant health challenges for children and on health policy and health care delivery system changes that could help improve children’s health outcomes.

According to the study, information and communication technology developed primarily for adult populations lacks the functionality to support pediatric care. The researchers argue that by not focusing on the unique needs of children, health IT tools are being underused in children’s health. The study adds that underserved children who could gain the most from these tools are the least likely to reap their benefits. Researchers also provided recommendations for state policy leaders to serve California children more effectively.
