Brace for costly essential medicines, cardiac stents
Prices of essential medicines and cardiac stents are all set to rise as the Government has given nod to increase the same.
According to Drug Price Control Order (2013), prices of 871-odd medicines that are part of the National List of Essential Medicines, have been revised according to change in WPI. 
Prices of essential medicines including painkillers, anti-infectives, supplements and antibiotics, will go up by over 4 percent while cardiac stents will see an increase of 4.26 percent. The revised price came into effect on April 1.

Ceiling price of the most commonly used drug eluting stent (DES) have been increased to Rs 30,080 from Rs 27,890 while bare metal stents to Rs 8,261 from Rs 7,660.
Cardiac stents, a tiny expandable metal scaffold, are used to open up narrowed or weakened arteries to ensure proper blood flow. It plays a key role to prevent heart attacks.
In February 2017, the Government had capped the price of the stents by as much as 85 percent to check unethical profiteering. The move aimed at ensuring fair, reasonable and affordable price for coronary stents.
