Uttarakhand Govt Calls off Kanwar Yatra Over Possible Covid-19 Third Wave

The Uttarakhand government has called off the Kanwar yatra eyeing a possible third wave of the Covid-19. However, neighbouring state Uttar Pradesh is going ahead with the annual pilgrimage that Lord Shiva’s devotes observe during the monsoon season.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held discussions with senior state officials around the possible third wave of the Covid-19, detection of the Delta Plus variant in the northern state recently, as well as the experience of other nations that have seen a revival of Covid cases. The government has also reportedly asked experts for lending views on the issue before deciding to cancel the yearly pilgrimage.


He said that the state government has taken a decision to cancel the Kanwar yatra, according to a topmost priority to human life. The state government officials have held a lot of discussions on the issue in the past few days; they also discussed the issue with neighbouring states.


The Government of Uttarakhand’s decision to cancel the Kanwar yatra comes even as the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh government begun preparations for the yatra by enforcing restrictions.
