Efficacy of indigenous vaccines highlighted in recent study
An extensive collaborative study has indicated that Covishield and Covaxin notably diminish the risk of acute Covid-19 and against the Delta variant in Indians between the age group of 45 years and above. The findings of the study indicated that two doses of Covishield presented 80 per cent overall effectiveness against severe Covid while two doses of Covaxin showcased 69 per cent effectiveness. It was also stated that vaccine effectiveness was maximum with a 6-8 week interval between two doses of both vaccines.
The study conducted along with researchers from Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi; Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi; AIIMS-Jodhpur, JSS Medical College, Mysuru; Government Medical College, Nagpur; SRM Medical College, Chennai; JIPMER-Puducherry; Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research, AIIMS-New Delhi, Rishikesh, and Bhubaneswar; and ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune. The study is awaiting peer review and was published recently on a preprint.
