A growing shortage of important chemotherapy drugs, anesthetics and antibiotics, which has compromised or delayed care for some US patients and may have led to at least 15 deaths, represents a “pressing public health problem.
Critical challenges remain in the centuries-old battles against infectious diseases, particularly as bacteria and viruses mutate and as the threat of bioterrorism grows. More than 9.5 million people worldwide die each year from infectious diseases. Of particular concern today are virulent forms of ‘super bugs’ that have mutated and grown resistant to available antibiotics.
Health tools for smart phones that monitor blood sugar levels or work as stethoscopes may face the same scrutiny from regulators as heart stents or ultrasound machines.
There was a proposal introduced by the Food and Drug Administration that would allow it to regulate smartphone and tablet apps that relate to health and medical needs.
