There is an urgent need for atleast 500 medical colleges in India and that too in the next five years, urged the Medical Council of India (MCI). Further to that the MCI has also recommended that the proposed new medical colleges can be established now with a minimum requirement of only 10 acres of land and more than 250 students.
Parliament cleared the amended Indian Medical Council Act bill on Thursday, August 26. The bill proposed to reconstitute the Medical Council of India (MCI) within one year and establish a board of governors, which will the incharge of the MCI’s functions.
In a major decision that was conveyed to the Supreme Court on Friday, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has said that their decision to introduce one common entrance test for all medical courses in India has been accepted by the Union Ministry and would be introduced from the next year, that is, 2011.
It is very crucial to bridge the gap in the context of medical education, where many of the emerging and demanding courses are not present in the conventional courses currently.
